The New Zealand Project brings expert performers and educators in bowed strings and guitar to the Klang Valley: Professor Donald Maurice, Dr Jane Curry, and Emma Goodbehere. The masterclasses provide an opportunity to study not only with instrumentalists who have performed and recorded in orchestras, chamber ensembles and as soloists, but who are seasoned educators. In addition to their level of expertise, they bring to Malaysia special areas of education: historical performance practice, and the Suzuki Method to name but two. Two of the performers have doctorates and teach at Victoria University of Wellington, and the third was trained in The Hague: the heart of early music performance today.

The recital provides a rare opportunity: quite possibly the first time the baroque instrument named viola d’amore is brought to this country. The unique ensemble’s repertoire is not confined to early music, traversing music of four centuries. Most importantly, the performers will be conducting the event in the style of a lecture-recital, allowing the audience to gain an insight to the special instrumentation and the process of putting together chamber music.

Simply put, the masterclass and concert provide a real highlight in this year’s musical calendar. It is not by chance that the name of the ensemble translates to “New Zealand’s Love of Strings”, and all string music lovers will gain from being there to experience it.
