Methodist College Kuala Lumpur (MCKL) strives to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to gain entry into prestigious universities around the globe, pursue their chosen careers and make a difference in the world.  Methodist College Kuala Lumpur (MCKL) has humble origins as a school that was intended to serve as an institution of second chances for students who were unsuccessful in passing their public school examinations. When they otherwise would have faced a bleak future, the then Methodist High School enabled them to complete their secondary education. Thirty years have passed since then, but MCKL still stands by its original purpose as an institution where students can come alive to their God-given ability to make a unique difference in the world. The college strives to provide students with an environment that is conducive to effective studying and a community that is founded on ethics, integrity and discipline in the Methodist tradition.

To that end, MCKL offers the following programs:

  • A Levels
  • Western Australian Matriculation
  • Diploma in Early Childhood Education
  • Certified Accounting Technician
  • ACCA

Each of these programs is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue their chosen careers at competitive and affordable prices. Further support is provided to deserving students who need it in the form of scholarships and financial aid, and the criteria can range from academic and co-curricular achievements to family financial backgrounds. In addition to that, there are alternative methods for students to obtain financial support for their studies, such as the Star Scholarship or the KPM Bursary.

WORLD-CLASS FACULTY

MCKL ensures that its staff are qualified and dedicated to the cause of educating our youth in preparation for the world at large. Amongst them is Khor Kheng Leik, the Deputy Director of Academic Studies (Tertiary Programs), who is a Harvard graduate with a Master’s in Education. Alongside her are academicians such as Grace Lim and Dr Lee Chong Yew, who are graduates from University of Cambridge and University of Southampton, respectively. There are many others like them, and many go the extra mile by serving as mentors or advisors for individual students as well as the various clubs and societies, including the Christian Fellowship. It is because of the continuous efforts and vigilance of such staff members that MCKL is able to focus on holistic education, ensuring that its students’ academic excellence is complemented by empathy, moral integrity and a strong passion for making a significant difference to their families, society and nation. As MCKL CEO Moey Yoke Lai puts it, “Let us all work together to make MCKL a College of distinction to produce well-educated citizens who will make us proud of their achievements in nation building.”

A RICH CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAM

MCKL encourages students to participate in a wide range of co-curricular and sporting activities. There are over 40 clubs and societies that students can choose from, such as the Model United Nations Club, Economics Club, Leo Club or the Music Club. Community Service is also an integral part of a student’s experience in MCKL. Their participation in the various activities will help develop interest in different cultures, build confidence, time management, leadership and interpersonal skills, and enable students to mature in terms of self-control and discipline. MCKL’s Christian Fellowship is one of the most comprehensive in these aspects, as it also allows students to grow in their faith and relationship with God in addition to having fellowship with others from all walks of life, regardless of race or creed. For example, the Interfaith Dialogue, which is organized annually by the Christian Fellowship, is an excellent platform for students to grow in mutual understanding and interracial harmony.

Students will also eventually begin considering their options after completing their studies in MCKL, and this is where the University Placement Services comes in. It is a department dedicated to guiding students on how to gain entry into top universities around the world. Lim Kai Shin, one of MCKL’s brightest students, said, “I didn’t quite know what I wanted as a career, but, with the help of the counselor and encouragement from other staff in MCKL, I took a very huge first step: stepping out of my comfort zone and believing in myself. I applied to five universities in the UK for Business Management and got accepted to all of them.” As a result of the collective efforts of the committed staff, MCKL has been able to assist students in achieving their full potential, graduating with excellent grades and gaining entry into prestigious universities around the world. In 2011, Chew Kwang Liang was the only Malaysian student accepted into Yale University. In 2012, Tong Kin Seng was the only Malaysian student who gained entry to read Medicine at the University of Oxford. And last year had a line-up of students with impressive admissions and scholarships: Chan Yen Ping will enter Cambridge University on the MCKL Teaching Scholarship; Janice Koh Kar Oon will enter the University of Tokyo on the JAGAM & Japanese Government Scholarships; Joshua Wong gained entry into Nanyang Technological University on the ASEAN Scholarship; Ng Wai Lam and Lok Chen-Yue have both received the Khazanah Scholarship to study Biochemistry in the University of Oxford and Economics in University College London respectively; and How Han Ming is the only Malaysian to receive the prestigious Wesleyan Freeman Scholarship.   For more information on MCKL, visit www.mckl.edu.my
