World famous environmentalist and UN Goodwill Ambassador Dr John Francis recently visited the British School of Kuala Lumpur to give an inspiring talk to Secondary students.

Dr Francis, who is also known as the Planetwalker, is famous for choosing to give up using motorised vehicles, instead walking everywhere he went for 22 years. He also spent 17 years in total silence having chosen to listen to people and take in what they had to say.

As they sat in the magnificent BSKL Theatre, students listened eagerly as Dr Francis spoke of his decision to walk instead of using cars having witnessed the damage done to the environment in an oil tanker collision in 1971 in San Francisco bay. For the next 22 years, the Planetwalker went on foot across the USA.

When asked by students how he communicated and got his message across, he recalled the notes he would write, or how powerful sign language can be in communication.  The BSKL students thoroughly enjoyed listening to Dr John Francis and went home with plenty to think about regarding the future of the planet.
