Students are assessed on the creation of an iBook which explains how plants and animals inherit traits from their parents. They are to explain one plant and one animal of their choosing.  The purpose of the iBook is to explain heredity.  The audience for their writing is defined as a third grader. Problem solving skills are demonstrated as students work through the technology of creating an iBook independently.

Students are challenged to produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. Students must develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach.  Students must use technology, including the internet, to produce and publish writing and to interact and collaborate with others. Students must be able to conduct short research projects that build knowledge about a topic.  In addition students must gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, assess the credibility and accuracy of each source, and integrate the information while avoiding plagiarism.

WOW!  That is a lot for an 8 to 9 year old.  RAS teachers are skilled in instructional strategies that guide and facilitate student learning and lead them to accomplish complex tasks.
