R.E.A.L International School Johor Bahru Students Collaborate with MBJB for Beach Clean-Up Initiative
On 27 September 2024, students from Years 8, 9, 10, and 11 at R.E.A.L International Secondary School Johor Bahru demonstrated their commitment to environmental stewardship by collaborating with Majlis Bandaraya Johor Bahru (MBJB) in a beach clean-up initiative at Stulang Laut. This meaningful project aimed to foster environmental awareness and a sense of community responsibility among the students, allowing them to engage actively in preserving their local environment.
The event was attended by MBJB Councillor Mr. Chong See Ming, who worked alongside the students in their efforts to clear litter and debris from the beach. Speaking on the importance of such collaborative initiatives, Mr. Chong stated, “Collaborating with students in this gotong-royong effort is an excellent way to nurture a sense of environmental responsibility. It highlights how collective community actions can significantly improve the cleanliness and sustainability of our city.”
The educational benefits of the project were underscored by Ms. Joane Ong, Head of International Secondary at R.E.A.L Schools Johor Bahru. She noted, “This hands-on experience teaches our students the importance of environmental stewardship. They are learning beyond the classroom, actively contributing to their community, and understanding the impact of their actions on the environment.”
Campus Principal Dr Chandra reinforced the initiative aligns with the school’s focus on learning through community engagement. “Our emphasis on building strong community ties and incorporating corporate social responsibility (CSR) into our educational framework is exemplified through this gotong-royong project. We aim to develop responsible citizens who contribute meaningfully to society,” she said.
This beach clean-up effort reflects R.E.A.L Schools’ commitment to providing a holistic education that instils values of teamwork, responsibility, and environmental consciousness in students. By participating in such initiatives, students not only enhance their awareness of environmental issues but also learn the importance of collaboration and civic engagement.
