Engaging children in the performing arts yields benefits that extend beyond mere applause. Research indicates that youngsters who actively participate in singing, dancing, acting, or playing on stage are four times more likely to receive recognition for their academic accomplishments compared to their non-performing peers. “The Sound of Music,” presented by Sri KDU National Primary School Kota Damansara, goes beyond entertainment, the annual school production also commits to addressing educational inequity by contributing to Teach for Malaysia an independent, not-for-profit organization.

Mr. Trevor Spence, the Executive Principal, emphasizes the enduring value of on-stage experiences. These experiences teach children to improvise, think on their feet, and tackle challenges—skills that resonate in classrooms and diverse settings.

Spence points out, “Early exposure to performance anxiety equips children for life’s pivotal moments. “The Sound of Music” production not only offers a temporary escape into different roles but also cultivates empathy and teamwork. While these skills may not have direct applications in academic subjects, the process exposes children to innovative thinking and instills a sense of accomplishment.”

Under the leadership of Ms. Foo Mei Kay, the Head of Structured Performing Arts, the yearly production engaged 350 students aged 7 to 12, committing 11 weeks to rehearsals guided by 76 teachers. The creative process, including costume design, stage sets, and make-up, was a collaborative effort involving students, teachers, and supportive parents.

Adding a unique Malaysian touch, the musical production infused a twist of humour and some local language into “The Sound of Music” storyline, all while staying true to the essence of the original narrative. This creative approach contributed to the event’s success and added an extra layer of connection for the local audience.

During the opening of the production, Mr. Anthony Partington, the CEO of XCL Education, highlighted the pursuit of reducing educational disparities. He emphasized, “With the contribution to Teach for Malaysia, it is our hope to encourage the children of Sri KDU to positively impact on others, fostering their understanding of the broader world, encouraging empathy for those with fewer resources, and nurturing an awareness of the well-being of others”

The musical performance, held over two days and drawing attendance from 1500 people for each night, and an accumulated fund-raising efforts from Merdeka carnival achieved remarkable success by raising RM100,126. These funds carry a meaningful purpose as they will go towards sponsoring the training of promising graduates and young professionals, preparing them to serve as teachers in underserved schools in Perak and Sarawak. The culmination of this impactful initiative saw the donation witnessed by YAM Tunku Ali Redhauddin ibni Tuanku Muhriz, the esteemed Chairman and Founding Trustee of Teach for Malaysia and the Chair of Governors at Sri KDU Schools.

In total, the charitable efforts, including the sum of RM4,848 collected through the donation box and food sales during the charity nights, culminated in an awe-inspiring total charity contribution of RM104,974 for Teach for Malaysia.
