Earth Heir® is a local brand that offers handcrafted merchandises such as jewellery, handbags, and many others. As a brand, their goal is to create sustainable livelihoods, to preserve heritage craftsmanship, to produce design-focused products, and to support refugee artisans. Earth Heir® encourages refugees to upskill and grow to be independent, through sustainable livelihoods. By applying traditional techniques developed through many generations, and uniquely using and processing locally sourced materials, the artisan sector becomes a consistent source of income for their artisans, especially the refugee communities.
1. Jewellery
Earth Heir® partnered with MADE51 to create a line of beautiful jewellery made by refugee artisans living in Malaysia. MADE51 is a global brand of artisanal products designed by refugees and produced by UNHCR. According to MADE51, each of the product is a tangible symbol of hope, where they provide the opportunity for refugees to earn an income, to preserve their culture and to contribute to their host communities through their craft.
The collection showcases delicate 24 karat gold-plated or .999 fine silver-plated jewellery with hand-stitched patterns inspired by the geometric motifs distinctive to the Middle-Eastern art and architecture in honour of the heritage of Afghanistan, Palestine, Syria and Iran refugees, or the undulating mountains of Myanmar to honour the heritage of Burmese refugees living in Malaysia.
2. Cases
These rainbow-coloured handwoven cases are available in the form of passport covers and A5 size notebook covers. They are part of the Mengkuang collection. For your information, mengkuang is a type of Malaysian screw pine. Mengkuang leaves are harvested, dried, dyed, and woven into mats before they are formed into these well-handcrafted covers.
3. Handbags
Earth Heir® offers a variety of handbags in vibrant colours, and different shapes and sizes. Most of the handbags are weaved by local artisans across Malaysia. The materials of the bag range from cargo packing strips to mengkuang leaves. The handles on the bags are made from upcycled leather from a small local shoe factory. All bags come with an inner organiser, made by refugee women, that sits perfectly within the bag to keep your belongings clutter-free and tidy.
4. Reusable face masks
Earth Heir® offers reusable 3-ply face masks that are sewn by refugee tailors living in Malaysia, in a workshop sanitised according to World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) standards. Every mask is WFTO Fair Trade certified and it comes with a filter pocket, where you can change the filters of your choice after each use. These reusable masks come in adult and child sizes with elastic strings for comfort and convenience. 2% of all sales proceeds will be donated to the “Post COVID-19 Recovery Program for Fair Trade Enterprises in Asia Fund”.
