Inside the Schools

R.E.A.L Schools What gives a local private or international school the edge over the rest? At R.E.A.L Schools, it is providing students the additional avenue of learning practical living skills and gaining real-world experience as part of a truly complete and balanced education.

R.E.A.L Schools is one of only two international schools in Malaysia to be certified in running the Cambridge Practical Science programme R.E.A.L Schools is one of only two international schools in Malaysia to be certified in running the Cambridge Practical Science programme   Grooming tomorrow’s leaders involves creating various and ample opportunities for students to develop unique but relevant knowledge such as entrepreneurial skills as well as “how” to organize and publicly promote major school events, not merely taking part in them. These include staging live fashion shows and grand musical plays such as Phantom of the Opera, Mamma Mia, Tarzan the Musical, Nanny the Musical and Batman & Catwoman, to name a few. This distinctly “R.E.A.L” attribute also entails creating diverse and enriching student experiences that are derived from staple R.E.A.L School efforts such as educational discovery trips and social outreach programs. One example was a humanitarian trip to Cambodia, where a group of R.E.A.L School students and teachers helped to install much-needed water supply systems for poor villagers who were previously deprived of such basic amenities. Other trips that R.E.A.L students have embarked on in recent years include cultural and student exchange visits to South Korea and Germany, among others. “The organizing of such trips are part and parcel of the R.E.A.L Schools initiative that is devoted to providing lessons beyond books and the classroom environment. One can neither put a price nor substitute the experience and exposure gained by the students from such enjoyable yet educational excursions,” said Serena Chow, Senior Principal and Business Manager of R.E.A.L Schools’ Cahaya Campus in Shah Alam.

SOLID ACADEMIC OPTIONS

Its international syllabus, comprising both the Cambridge International Primary Program and the widely-recognized Cambridge IGCSE for Secondary students, is integrated with localized content – thus adding depth, quality and versatility to the needs of a diverse learning community. Meanwhile, R.E.A.L Schools’ long-established private national schools deliver the standard Malaysian curricula for students at the Primary and Secondary levels. However, further depth and substance are added to the syllabi by enhancing it with selected elements from the Singapore education syllabus; especially in the subjects of English, Mathematics and Science.

PROMOTING LANGUAGE MASTERY

These are primarily for students from Chinese-medium schools who are weak in the subject and for international students who are non-native English speakers. As part of the school’s effort in promoting language proficiency among its students, a strong focus on Mandarin has long been part of the R.E.A.L Schools’ identity. In fact, it is a core subject for all its national school students. For the international school, there is no compromise on the standard of Mandarin either. This has resulted in outstanding achievements, which include several R.E.A.L International School students earning “Top in the World” awards for Foreign Language Mandarin Chinese in the Cambridge IGCSE examination.

ESPOUSING EXTRACURRICULAR EXCELLENCE

This is complemented by purpose-built facilities; from swimming pools and football fields to basketball, badminton, netball and even indoor futsal courts. Further enhancing this physical education is the employment of proper, professional coaching. R.E.A.L Schools bring in qualified coaches to train students in sports such as swimming, taekwondo and judo. This full and active participation is not just highly encouraged, but supported wholeheartedly by the school with the aim of unearthing rare talents that could potentially go far. Stellar examples of these “R.E.A.L talents’ include national junior golfer Ervin Chang, national shooter Joseph Lee, national ice skater Michelle Shepherdson and state archer Sebastian Koh. “The school has rendered me unwavering support and encouragement upon realizing my ability, achievements and ambitions in archery,” said Sebastian, a 15-year-old student of R.E.A.L Schools, Cheras Campus.

A UNIQUELY INNOVATIVE CURRICULUM

This not only equips them with the relevant skills and knowledge, but encourages a lifelong love for learning as well. Driving these efforts are unique and innovative R.E.A.L Schools programs such as LEGO & Robotics Education as well as an Art & Design program, which consists of fine art, graphic design and fashion design. “These distinctly creative components of the R.E.A.L Schools curriculum offer students a vital avenue to develop and display their innate talents and interests, all within a safe and purpose-built environment,” explained Ms. S.P. Lee, Senior Principal and Business Manager of R.E.A.L Schools, Suria Campus, Cheras. Combining studies and play often produces outstanding results. Students are always more motivated or inspired to do better when they enjoy doing something. It is therefore the role of the school to provide that platform for students to pursue their passions, unleash their true talents and ultimately fulfill their hidden potential. Realizing this, R.E.A.L Schools have invested heavily in the required infrastructure, hardware and software equipment, as well as a group of dedicated teaching staff in order to bring this vision to fruition.

R.E.A.L CARE FOR STUDENTS' WELFARE

The availability of a certified, full-time student counselor, along with Pastoral Care teachers who have relevant experience in dealing with student affairs on a daily basis, attest to the school’s commitment towards this cause. Crucially, this area also covers students’ character building. R.E.A.L Schools does not champion character building as a mere “supplementary” program. It incorporates character-based lessons into daily curriculum. This sends the message that while getting good grades in exams is important, good character always come first. With over 28 years of history in shaping education excellence, R.E.A.L Schools is dedicated towards delivering holistic education ranging from Preschool, Primary to Secondary levels. The aim is to nurture well-rounded students with outstanding grades, robust in extracurricular activities, and who possess leadership qualities as well as lifelong practical living skills. R.E.A.L Schools’ quality and achievements as a top private school were recognized when it was awarded a “5-star rating” by the Ministry of Education Malaysia.
