Sri KDU National Secondary School's Dual-Language Musical Production Celebrates Cultural Appreciation and Malay Language Mastery

Sri KDU National Secondary School's recent showcase of musical flair, performing arts, and a unique bilingual production stands as a shining example of cultural appreciation and student empowerment. The school's bold endeavour highlighted the importance of the Malay language while fostering a collaborative effort between students and teachers in bringing the rich cultural tale of Puteri Gunung Ledang to life, with an innovative twist.

This impressive adaptation of Puan Sri Tiara Jacquelina's iconic Puteri Gunung Ledang, originally produced by Enfiniti Production, integrated English dialogues with captivating Malay songs, allowing audiences to appreciate the beauty of the Malay language while emphasizing the themes of environmental stewardship and empowerment. The performance bridged two languages to enhance the students' confidence and skills in speaking Malay—an essential aspect of their cultural and linguistic growth.

A Stunning, Reimagined Performance

Puteri Gunung Ledang tells the heartbreaking story of forbidden love between Gusti Puteri, a Javanese princess, and Hang Tuah, the noble admiral of Melaka. Despite their deep love, political and familial ambitions create insurmountable barriers. The princess, forced into a marriage alliance by her brother, escapes to Mount Ledang. The Sultan, determined to marry her, sets out on a mission to win her heart, only to face impossible challenges set by the princess herself. The tragic ending sees the lovers bound by fate but forever apart, symbolizing both the depth of their love and the harsh reality of their separation.

An Unprecedented Effort of Collaboration and Sustainability

What truly sets this production apart is the level of involvement from 140 students—aged 14 to 17 — across various roles, including cast members, dancers, choir, band, sets and props, media and design, logistics, and food and beverage. Furthermore, 60 staff members, including teachers, took on pivotal roles not only as mentors but as active participants — some even performing on stage with the student cast, band, and choir. This collaboration between teachers and students is a testament to the school’s approach to creative learning, fostering a nurturing environment where students can grow in confidence and linguistic proficiency.

The school’s commitment to sustainability also made a profound impact. In line with the school’s Eco Schools Programme (TESP), the production embraced eco-friendly practices. Costumes were made from reused fabrics, sets and props were repurposed from previous productions, and banners for promotion were hand-painted for a sustainable touch. In an effort to reduce paper waste, promotional materials, including booklets and tickets, were provided digitally. The food and beverage stalls operated with a recycling-based concept, underscoring the school’s dedication to a greener future.

Lili Mariah, Principal of Sri KDU National Secondary School, shared her thoughts on the significance of the event: “At Sri KDU Secondary School, we believe in giving students the space to explore their creativity, express themselves with confidence, and embrace their cultural roots. This production was more than just a performance—it was fully owned by the students, guided by dedicated teacher mentorship, and driven by their passion and leadership. Through this, we invested in our strong belief that when given the right opportunities, our students can excel in their pursuits and build strong networks of collaboration. The success of the cross-student committee, led by the Eco-School Programme student leaders, is a testament to this—proving that when we empower our students, they not only rise to the challenge but redefine what is possible. Most importantly, this was a celebration of our community of collaboration and belonging, where students and teachers came together, supported one another, and created something truly meaningful. Seeing their dedication, resilience, and growth throughout this journey reaffirms our mission of shaping future leaders who are bold, innovative, and grounded in their heritage.”

Empowering Students and Promoting the Malay Language

This unique production was not just a showcase of talent, but also an exercise in cultural appreciation and linguistic growth. By integrating performing arts with the Malay language, the school effectively demonstrated how creativity and language learning can intersect. The students not only honed their artistic skills but also developed greater fluency and confidence in using Malay, building a deeper connection to their heritage.

Sri KDU National Secondary School’s Puteri Gunung Ledang performance was a powerful demonstration of how education can transcend the classroom, engage students in meaningful ways, and build pride in their cultural identity while promoting sustainable practices. This event is a milestone in the school’s commitment to fostering creativity, sustainability, and language mastery in the next generation.
