Stonyhurst International School Penang marked a significant milestone on 27 November 2025 when it welcomed Ms Melissa Abache from the University of Cambridge and Ms Amy Smith from Imperial College London for a two-hour lecture titled The University of Cambridge & Imperial College London Present: Unlocking UK University Success Through Super-Curricular Activities. This landmark and unprecedented event drew an audience of more than 300 participants comprising pupils, parents, and members of the wider academic community, including principals, counsellors, teachers, and education advisors in town.
The speakers articulated with precision the distinctions between co-curricular activities (CCA) and extra-co-curricular activities (ECA) on one hand, and super-curricular activities (SCA) on the other. While CCA and ECA serve as valuable foundations, they emphasised that Russell Group universities increasingly seek the added depth—the “oomph factor”—in applicants’ intellectual engagement. Admissions tutors look for clear evidence of passion and academic curiosity: self-directed reading, independent exploration beyond the taught curriculum, and meaningful initiatives that demonstrate sustained commitment to a chosen discipline.
The atmosphere throughout the event was both convivial and intellectually stimulating. Particularly noteworthy was the presence of a Stonyhurst parent whose son is currently studying at Imperial, as well as an Imperial alumnus visiting from the United States—both of whom adjusted their schedules to attend. In addition to the insightful presentations, participants valued the dynamic Q&A session and the opportunity for informal conversations with the distinguished guests and fellow attendees.
The Sixth Form Centre has since been inundated with enquiries and requests for a sequel to this successful programme. Preparations for the next instalment are already under way, and further updates will be shared via the school’s official social media channels.
