About Sunnybank Hills Special Needs School
Our program is all about community-based learning, which means we focus on real-life skills that our students can use outside the classroom. We cover a wide range of subjects like Mathematics, English, Science, Health, and Physical Education, but our main goal is to equip our students with essential life skills. We dive into areas like financial management, safety management, transportation, communication, and self-care.
In our daily program, we incorporate Occupational Therapy (OT), Physiotherapy (PT), and Speech- Language Therapy (ST). However, when it comes to the class-based structure, it differs from the one-on-one intensive sessions. In the class-based setting, our therapists and educators collaborate closely to provide exceptional support and coaching during daily teaching sessions. The Sunny Trails Adventure Club program, led by our School Based Division, integrates the expertise of allied health professionals into coaching our educators.
During the first month, a school assessment will be conducted to evaluate the needs of the students. Based on the assessment results, an individualized curriculum plan will be designed, taking into consideration any recommendations for additional one-on-one sessions if necessary. Through personalized lesson plans and a focus on practical skills, we aim to maximize each student's learning experiences. By tailoring our teaching approaches, we create opportunities for students to build on their strengths while addressing areas where they may need extra support.
