AISM Wins Top Awards at World Scholar’s Cup (WSC) Regional Round

Thirty ‘Scholaroos’ from the Australian International School Malaysia made their way to the Johor Bahru Regional Round of the World Scholar’s Cup (WSC) held at the Raffles American School last weekend. The event saw strong competition from participants of schools from Malaysia and the South East Asia region including Indonesia and Singapore. AISM has been part of the WSC Program for nine years now, building a reputation as the strongest Malaysian school in this competition. Typically, each year AISM students win either or both of the Junior and Senior Sections.

The scholars compete in teams of three in a variety of academic pursuits including debate, essay writing and examinations. The theme for this year was ‘An Unlikely World’ and they were required to study an array of new content that ranged from history to conspiracy theories, to the work of Emily Dickinson and the challenges of economic forecasting.

All of their hard work resulted in success with the Team bringing home 24 trophies and 297 medals, with each student winning at least four medals and two students winning 16 medals each. AISM also won Overall Champion (Junior Division Team) as well as in the Top Debater (Senior Division) category. One Year 9 student, Erja Suhaimy, was also crowned Top Scholar Award (Junior Division) across all competitions and was given the honour of speaking in the Showcase Debate.

At AISM, students have the opportunity to pursue an academic, co-curricular and extracurricular education program that prepares them to be both great scholars and great people.  Not only are they challenged to be the best they can be from an academic perspective, they also develop important character traits such as how to conduct themselves in public settings, how to work as a team member or leader, and how to experience failure and success.
