Why Environmental Education Matters for Muslim Children

If we do not take care of the Earth, then who will? The everyday choices we make can either help protect the planet or slowly harm it. The Earth needs consistent, mindful actions from all of us. Parents, let us start teaching our children the benefits of recycling, the importance of picking up trash and the value of respecting nature.

As Muslims, caring for the environment is not simply a good habit. It is a spiritual responsibility rooted in the teachings of Islam.

What Is the Eco-Islamic Approach at IDRISSI International School?

At IDRISSI School, caring for the environment is not just a classroom topic. It is something students put into practice every single day. Our unique Eco-Islamic approach weaves environmental values and the beautiful teachings of Islam into all lessons across all year groups.

Students learn that looking after the planet is part of who they are as khalifah (caretakers of the Earth). Core Islamic concepts such as mizan (balance) and israf (avoiding excess) are not just vocabulary words. They become part of how students think, speak and act in daily life.

This is what sets IDRISSI International School apart as a leading Islamic green school in Malaysia.

Tree Planting at IDRISSI School: Giving Seedlings a New Home

Nature is one of the greatest teachers. The mini-garden at IDRISSI School serves as a living outdoor classroom for students of all ages.

Earlier this year, Gamuda Parks visited our school and partnered with our Year 7 and Year 8 students to plant 30 new saplings of Dipterocarpus kerrii (Keruing Gondol), a native Malaysian tree species. The hands-on planting session gave students a meaningful lesson in science, environmental responsibility and community service.

In Islam, planting trees is regarded as an act of ongoing charity known as sadaqah jariyah. The planter continues to receive blessings from every bird, person or animal that benefits from the tree.

Allah's Messenger (SAW) said:

"There is none amongst the Muslims who plants a tree or sows seeds, and then a bird, or a person or an animal eats from it, but is regarded as a charitable gift for him." (Sahih al-Bukhari)

This hadith reminds students that environmental action is also an act of worship.

How Does IDRISSI School Practise Reduce, Reuse and Recycle?

A true eco-school makes recycling part of everyday life, and that is exactly what we do at IDRISSI International School. Recycling bins are placed throughout all campuses, and students use them consistently every day.

Leftover project sheets, scrap paper, empty bottles and tins all find their proper place through our school-wide recycling system. These small, consistent habits build a culture where nothing goes to waste and every resource is given a second life.

This practice connects directly to an important Quranic reminder:

"Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils." (Surah Al-Isra, 17:27)

When students remind one another not to waste water or to pick up litter without being asked, it is clear that real change is happening. Step by step, IDRISSI is building a community that cares not only about academic achievement but also about the world around them.
