On Friday 27th June, students of Garden International School (GIS) donated funds raised by them of over RM138,000 to nine charities operating both in Malaysia and other parts of Asia.

One third of the 2014 total went to the Malaysian Children's Operation, while another third was donated to the Typhoon Haiyan Aid charity to help with the rebuilding effort in the Phillipines. The Haiyan Aid donation will be handed over personally by a group of GIS students and staff who will be visiting the effected areas to assist with the project.

The remainder of the funds was split between the below charities:

  • WAKE
  • Children's Wish Society of Malaysia Taman Megah
  • Desa Amal Jireh (Rumah Faith Orphanage)
  • Stepping stones
  • Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation
  • Women's Aid Organisation
  • Lighthouse Children's Welfare Home

Each year, GIS’s team of prefects organizes a number of activities to raise funds for various charities. The largest of these fundraising activities is the annual MUFTI day event held at GIS. The prefects turned the campus into a theme park for the day by bringing in bouncy castles, games, various rides, food stalls from all over KL and a battle of the bands music competition.

Other fundraising activities throughout the year included a football tournament, a Movember competition and a day when the teachers wore the student school uniform.

The MUFTI day event is part of a bigger community service program at GIS as the school recognises the need to educate students in becoming active citizens who contribute to their community both on a local and global level. Other community service activities include street feeding in KL and teaching English to underprivileged children.

While GIS boasts a well-deserved reputation for academic excellence, it also recognizes that students require more than academic skills and competencies to succeed in life. Education at Garden International School therefore focuses on achieving the Student Vision for adaptable lifelong learners, active citizens, effective contributors, resilient individuals, independent enquirers and creative thinkers.
