More than 170,000 students across the world received their International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (IBDP) results yesterday, from the May 2021 examination session. Nexus International School Malaysia, one of the top IBDP Schools in Malaysia, is extremely proud of its graduates who persevered throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and reached outstanding milestones.
Achieving its best results ever this year, the school is proud of its two students, Caryn Chan and Juney Bae, who have achieved a perfect score of 45 points, which puts Caryn and Juney amongst the Top in the World with access to the best universities and pathways.
“Online classes during the pandemic felt strange to me. But, Nexus teachers were accommodating and engaging, making it less daunting to speak during online sessions. I had many one-to-one sessions with my teachers which allowed me to ask questions, resolve gaps in my knowledge and build rapport with my teachers and friends,” said Caryn, one of the top achievers who has applied to study Computer Science in Singapore.
“I was also fortunate enough to be part of a close-knit boarding community at Nexus and received immense support throughout the 2 years of pursuing the IB Diploma,” she adds.
Juney, who hails from Korea, on the other hand is amongst one of only two students from Malaysia who has been successfully accepted to KAIST University this year, a highly reputed national science & technology university in Korea. She chose to study the IB Diploma because she was attracted to the many aspects of IBDP, such as the Extended Essay, Creativity, Action & Service (CAS) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) which she feels prepared her for beyond high school. She attributes her success to the support she received from Nexus teachers.
“Nexus teachers supported me academically as well as mentally, during the pandemic. I want to major in Engineering and chose rigorous subjects that were challenging. My teachers would always counsel and motivate me, and I’ve never felt uncomfortable or scared to approach them for extra help on subjects,” said Juney.
Outperforming Worldwide Average IBDP Scores
Nexus learners once again achieved world-beating results in the IBDP with an extremely high average score of 38 points, outperforming the worldwide average of 33 points. Over 40% of our graduates achieved more than 40 points - more than quadruple the world average. Nexus’ learners also achieved a 100% pass rate, 89% being the worldwide average.
“As a non-selective and inclusive school, the true magic lies not in the achievement of our top achievers alone. Our learners, regardless of where they are at, are taught to solve problems, innovate and remain resilient throughout challenges, and excel against benchmarks set against themselves. This is demonstrated through the achievement of Value Added results of 3.9 points which means that Nexus learners, on average, scored almost 4 points higher across the six subjects they took. Now, this is something I take great pride in,” says Morag McCrorie, Head of Secondary.
Boarding also adds to the benefits of a Nexus education. Nexus boarding is ideal for exam year students, offering a good routine, balanced lifestyle, peer-to-peer and expert teacher support and mentoring.
“Constantly attending, and often facilitating professional learning, our teachers are also highly experienced in providing the individualized mentoring and support that our IBDP learners require and deserve throughout their 2-year pre-university course.” says David Griffiths, Principal at Nexus.
In the past years, Nexus learners have been accepted to top universities around the world such as Imperial College London, University of St Andrews, University of Melbourne, University of Warwick, University College London, Duke University, University of British Columbia and many more. Indeed, the IB programme at Nexus provides a clear pathway to learners’ universities of choice.
About the IB Diploma Programme
The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) is for students aged 16-19, recognized and respected by the world’s leading universities. Evidence suggests that higher rates of IBDP students go on to university, are more likely to attend a top 20 university and achieve a first-class honours degree. The IB Diploma Programme is made up of six subject groups and the Diploma core, comprising Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) and the Extended Essay (EE).
Through the IB Diploma core, students reflect on the nature of knowledge, complete independent research and undertake a project that often involves community service.
