KUALA LUMPUR — On the morning of June 7, the crowd at Oasis International School – Kuala Lumpur erupted in applause as 23 students representing eight countries crossed the stage—each with a diploma, a passport, and a future wide open.

Oasis International School (OIS), an American international school tucked in them suburbs of the Malaysian mega city, has been gaining momentum in the region’s educational landscape. This year’s graduating class received acceptances to top global universities including the University of Toronto, Waseda University, Penn State, NYU Shanghai, and Northeastern University—evidence that the school’s mission to develop globally minded, character-driven students is paying dividends.

But it wasn’t just the college destinations that stole the show. It was the stories.

Most notably, Valedictorian Wesley Shih Yin Huang, who arrived at OIS with no English background, delivered a powerful address, in the very language he once couldn’t speak. “You guys think that we [teachers] change you, but you change us,” said Mr. Ben Sullivan, as he recounted the valedictorian’s impact on the school.

Student leaders Teck Chee Tan (salutatorian) and Huang (valedictorian) reflected not only on academic growth, but the relationships, growth, and formative experiences that marked their years at OIS. Joining them was beloved educator King Sacramento, handpicked by the seniors to give the keynote address. His message—both tender and wise—encouraged students to lead with humility and resilience.

The program wasn’t without artistry. A moving performance of Billy Joel’s “Vienna” by seniors Xingyu Li and Adam Liu reminded guests that OIS isn’t only a place of academic rigor, but also of creative risk-taking and innovation. The secondary choir’s touching songs demonstrated how the whole school celebrated the achievements of this year’s seniors.

It’s this unique balance of rigor and warmth, structure and soul, that sets OIS apart in an increasingly crowded field of international schools. Founded on the pillars of Character, Leadership, and Innovation, OIS has cultivated a reputation for launching students into the world not just with excellent transcripts, but with lasting tenacity.

As High School Teacher Mr. Andy Dawson put it, “Our students don’t just get into great schools. They leave here ready to contribute to something bigger than themselves.”
