What began as a small co-curricular initiative with just three students has become one of Sri KDU International School Penang's most inspiring success stories.
In just two years, the school's World Scholar's Cup programme has grown from a bold vision into an internationally recognised platform for academic excellence, culminating in an outstanding performance at the World Scholar's Cup Global Round in Kuala Lumpur.
This year, seven students from Sri KDU International School Penang qualified for the prestigious Global Round, an exceptional milestone for a programme still in its infancy. Among them, Jayden, Marko and Shawn represented the school, joining more than 3,000 students from 39 countries for five days of academic competition, collaboration and cultural exchange.
Hosted at the iconic Plenary Hall of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, the Global Round brought together some of the world's brightest young minds to compete across Debate, Collaborative Writing, the Scholar's Challenge and the Scholar's Bowl, while celebrating curiosity, creativity and global citizenship.
Returning to Penang with an impressive collection of gold and silver medals across both individual and team events, the trio demonstrated not only academic excellence, but also resilience, teamwork and confidence on an international stage.
Their outstanding performa
nces also earned qualification for the prestigious Tournament of Champions at Yale University, widely regarded as the pinnacle of the World Scholar's Cup journey. Reserved for the competition's highest-performing scholars, qualification is an extraordinary accomplishment that reflects the exceptional calibre, dedication and intellectual curiosity of Sri KDU International School Penang's young scholars.
For Head of Primary, Ian Hopkins, the experience was about far more than medals.
"Standing in a hall with more than 3,000 students from 39 countries was a powerful reminder of what education can achieve beyond the classroom. The World Scholar's Cup celebrates curiosity over perfection, collaboration over individualism, and the confidence to think critically, communicate effectively and engage with ideas that broaden perspectives.
We are incredibly proud of our students. The medals are wonderful, but the confidence they have gained, the friendships they have built and the memories they have created will stay with them for a lifetime. Experiences like these show what is possible when students are given opportunities to challenge themselves beyond the curriculum.
The success of the programme is also a testament to the passion and vision of Joshua Sussex, who introduced the World Scholar's Cup to Sri KDU International School Penang during the 2024-25 academic year.
"The World Scholar's Cup provides students with a platform to explore their interests, develop their academic strengths and gain experiences that extend far beyond the competition itself," said Joshua. "What makes me most proud is seeing students discover what they are capable of. Watching this programme grow from just three students to seeing our scholars compete and succeed on the global stage has been incredibly rewarding. Jayden, Marko and Shawn each brought their own unique strengths to the team, and I couldn't be prouder of what they have accomplished together."
While the medals and accolades are worthy of celebration, they represent something even greater.
