Inside the Schools

What does a school’s culture look like when no one is watching? ✒️

It can be seen in how students respond when learning gets difficult, navigate differences of opinion, and notice when someone needs encouragement.

At Soka International School Malaysia (SISM), we intentionally nurture this culture through GReAt: Grit, Respect, and Appreciation.

More than school values, GReAt is a shared language that shapes how students learn, communicate, overcome challenges, and contribute to their community.

Here are six ways GReAt comes to life across student life at SISM:
1. Grit through a “never give up” mindset
From academics and sports to performances and boarding activities, students are encouraged to persevere. Achievement matters, but so does having the courage to try again. Setbacks become opportunities to learn, adapt, and grow.

2. Respect as everyday courage
Respect goes beyond good manners. It means listening to different perspectives, expressing ideas thoughtfully, disagreeing with kindness, and respecting others’ boundaries. In an international community, these habits help students become empathetic and confident communicators.

3. Appreciation as a daily practice
Students are encouraged to recognise the people, opportunities, and experiences that support their growth. Simple acts of gratitude help appreciation become a habit that shapes how they relate to others and engage with the world.

4. Understanding the purpose behind rules
Rather than simply following instructions, students are guided to understand why boundaries matter and how their choices affect others. This builds a stronger sense of responsibility for creating a safe and supportive community.

5. Dialogue and reflection when challenges arise
When conflict occurs, SISM prioritises dialogue and reflection wherever appropriate. Students learn to listen, reflect on their actions, take responsibility, and work towards reconciliation. Mistakes become opportunities for growth and positive change.

6. Consistency across school life
GReAt is reinforced in classrooms, co-curricular activities, and boarding life. Students learn that Grit, Respect, and Appreciation are not qualities reserved for particular lessons—they are values they can carry into their relationships, future studies, and lives beyond school.

For parents, this matters because character is not shaped through a single lesson, activity, or campaign. It develops through the experiences and interactions children encounter every day.

At SISM, GReAt helps students develop the grit to overcome challenges, respect to value others, and appreciation to create meaning wherever they go.

GReAt is not simply something our students learn. It is something they are encouraged to live.
