Inspiring a Love of Reading: Welcoming Sarah Roberts Back to Stonyhurst Penang

Published on 03 Mar 2026

Stonyhurst International School Penang was delighted to welcome back acclaimed children’s author and environmental journalist, Sarah Roberts, for her second visit to our school community. Her return was eagerly anticipated, and the day proved to be both inspiring and impactful for pupils and parents alike.

Sarah is a celebrated author known for her engaging storytelling and her ability to connect young readers with the natural world. With a distinguished background in environmental journalism, she has spent years exploring global issues and transforming real-world experiences into compelling narratives for children. Her latest book, The Wild Apprentice, reflects her passion for adventure, conservation, and courageous young protagonists — themes that resonate strongly with our pupils.

Throughout the day, Sarah led dynamic workshops, interactive storytelling sessions, and thoughtful discussions that ignited imagination and curiosity across year groups. Pupils were captivated not only by her stories but also by her journey as a writer — a reminder that creativity, perseverance, and purpose can open remarkable pathways in life.

Her visit also extended to our parent community, where she spoke about the importance of cultivating a love of reading at home. She emphasised that reading builds empathy, critical thinking, resilience, and confidence — qualities that lie at the heart of a holistic Jesuit education.

At Stonyhurst Penang, we strive to nurture pupils who embody the Jesuit Pupil Profile: young people who are curious, reflective, compassionate, and committed to serving others. Sarah’s work and personal journey exemplify these values. Her dedication to environmental awareness reflects stewardship of our common home, while her storytelling encourages pupils to become thoughtful global citizens.

Events such as this reaffirm our commitment to forming “men and women for others” — individuals who read widely, think deeply, and act with purpose. We are grateful to Sarah Roberts for once again inspiring our community and reminding us that through books, we discover not only new worlds, but also who we are called to become.
