Tropicana Foundation & Lapis Donates a Total of RM3 Million to St Joseph’s IB Scholarship Programme
Today marks another milestone for St Joseph’s Institution International School Malaysia (“SJII Malaysia”) as it unveiled its first International Baccalaureate Scholarship Programme (“SJII IB Scholarship”) in Malaysia. Held at the Tropicana Golf & Country Club, SJII IB Scholarship received two generous donations of RM1.5 million respectively from Tropicana Foundation – a charity organisation formed by Tropicana Corporation Berhad (“Tropicana”) and Lasallian Asian Partnerships for International Schools (“LAPIS”).
YBhg Tan Sri Dato’ Danny Tan, Founder & Advisor of Tropicana Foundation and Tropicana Corporation Berhad presented the mock cheque to Brother Thomas Lavin (“Brother Thomas”), the Brother President of SJII Malaysia whilst LAPIS was represented by Mr Michael Sng, Director of LAPIS and Chairman & Board of Governors of SJII Malaysia. Also present to witness the cheque presentation ceremony were the senior management of Tropicana, Board of Governors of SJII Malaysia, the Senior Leadership Team of SJII Malaysia and Scholarship Fund Contributing Directors from LAPIS.
SJII Malaysia – A Lasallian educational institution, is a brother school of St Joseph Institution International Singapore. Staying true to its Lasallian mission and values to transform lives and nurtures students to be people of integrity and to make a difference in society, this scholarship programme is created to provide holistic education experience to talented and capable students. The SJII IB Scholarship will have a total of RM3 million fund in its founding year and it will offer fee waivers of up to 100% to 12 qualified applicants entering Year 12 International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (“IBDP”) in August 2016. The IBDP is widely recognised as one of the world’s most challenging educational programmes. It is a rigorous and exciting two-year educational programme which gives students the opportunity to gain access to the best universities in the world.
Speaking at the event, YBhg Tan Sri Dato’ Danny Tan, Founder & Advisor of Tropicana said that Tropicana has always been working in sync with the pulse of the local communities and Tropicana home owners. “Building a school with SJII Malaysia is a sign of our commitment in not just creating harmonious partnerships for the benefit of our customers but ultimately, to also create an ideal and vibrant township that are strategic and holistic in nature. We have always believed in the importance of reaching out and ensuring that quality education is provided to everyone. With our contributions, the funds will go towards helping students to increase their knowledge and enrich their educational experience, thus giving these young minds the opportunity to excel further.”
Mr Michael Sng, Director of LAPIS and Chairman & Board of Governors of SJII Malaysia also took the opportunity to thank Tropicana for joining LAPIS in contributing to the Scholarship Fund, “Tropicana strongly believes in the school’s mission and values. Its contribution to the SJII IB Scholarship Programme will help elevate opportunities to deserving students to join SJII Malaysia. Tropicana is also a corporate partner of SJII Malaysia and has been instrumental in the construction of the campus.”
Speaking on behalf of SJII Malaysia, Brother Thomas Lavin said, “This is indeed a momentous day for our first and newest Lasallian campus in Malaysia. The launch of this scholarship programme continues the 300-year Catholic educational tradition of the De La Salle Brothers to provide financial assistance for needy students.”
Mr Stuart Glascott, the High School Principal of SJII Malaysia also echoed this in his welcoming speech and scholarship briefing stating that SJII Malaysia will be unique as it is the only Lasallian International School in Malaysia offering the renowned International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme for its Year 12s and 13s. The IB scholarship fund will go a long way in granting more talented students a chance to reap the benefits of a quality IBDP Programme in an outstanding school environment like SJII Malaysia.
SJII Malaysia will offer two-year scholarship to 12 students entering Year 12 (16 years old) in August 2016. The scholarship will also provide full board and lodging and some basic expenses for students living outside the Klang Valley. Applicants are expected to be able to provide evidence of good academic performance and demonstrate active participation and leadership in co-curricular activities. Applications will close on Friday, 19 February 2016 and scholarship tests will take place on Saturday, 27 February 2016. Short listed applicants will attend a selection interview in early March 2016.
